One of the things we talked about was the fashion community here in Portland and how its been a challenge for local creatives to grow their businesses from the production and marketing aspects.
From the marketing stand point I can totally see it. There are so many talented designers here in town that make amazing things but, they have no idea how to market or present their product in a way that leads to sales. Social media is the easiest and least expensive way to promote and drive sales (see my blog post on the Top 10 Tips to Creating An Awesome Social Media Campaign and How to Use Instagram to Grow Your Fashion Business) yet, many business Instagram accounts post more pictures of cats than of their product. That's cray!
From our conversation it seemed that everyone agreed that Portland desperately needs a fashion specific business accelerator that provides creatives with the resources to be successful. Well....fast forward to today and we just might have one! Meet the Portland Apparel Lab (PAL) cofounded by Crispin Argento and Dawn Moothart.
"The concept of the
Portland Apparel Lab is simple," said Argento. "The Portland region
is talent rich yet resource poor. Through PAL's member-supported collaborative
model, lifestyle entrepreneurs will have access to the tools, knowledge and
support to make their dreams, careers and success attainable."
So exciting! Portland Apparel Lab is having an event this coming Wednesday, September 10 at 6:30PM at the Museum of Contemporary Craft where they'll give an introductory presentation of their concept, products and services. Will I see you there? Hope so!
