A while back I posted a picture on Instagram of my hair with a DIY deep conditioning mask on. My hair is naturally really dry so deep conditioning is a staple in my hair care regime, especially during the winter months. I used to use a store bought treatment, (and sometimes still do. I really want to try some of the Carol's Daughter products) but for the last few months I've opted to DIY-it with a coconut oil, avocado and honey mask.
The switch off between a couple DIY masks but my favorite is the moisturizing mask. It. Is. AMAZING and the natural ingredients have great benefits for the hair. Avocado is high in vitamins B + E which helps to strengthen your hair. The high fat in avocados also adds moisture to you hair. Extra virgin coconut oil is one of the few oils that can penetrate the hair shaft. This allows it to strengthen the hair, add shine and prevent split ends and breakage. The honey in this mask also helps retain moisture and shine. Honey can also strengthen the hair follicles aiding in hair loss prevention and makes hair soft and smooth. I like to add a few teaspoons of castor oil to my hair mask as well. The vitamin E and omega-6 fatty acids in castor oil helps repair damaged hair and promotes growth and thickness.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
1 large avocado
1 1/2 tbsp virgin coconut oil
1 tbsp honey
2 tsp castor oil (bonus)
Mix + blend well. If the avocado is chunky it tends to get really messy.
Leave in hair 30mins - 1 hour.
Rinse well with cool water. It's not cute to have pieces of cooked avocado in your hair. trust me, Ive done it-ha!
I typically don't measure my ingredients when making my hair mask. I tweak the recipe according to the condition of my hair. I'd encourage you to play around with the amounts and find what your hair likes.
I love this mask! When I fist started making this mask my hair had heat damage and my curls had lost their "curl". However, since using this mask overtime I've noticed that my curls are beginning to come back and my hair is really, really healthy!

Thanks for the recipe! I'll have to try it. Maybe my hair will look as great as yours does!
ReplyDeleteWow, this sounds great. I've never done a hair mask, but I might give this a try.
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued! I don't think I've ever tried a hair mask before. My hair right now could use this!
