If I were to describe the style in Portland, I would say that it's relaxed, layered and uncomplicated. Some would argue that Portlanders don't concern themselves with trends but I'd have to disagree. Portlanders may not know every trend for each season, but they are overall aware of what's current...however their interpretation of that trend may be questionable.
A quote from the article described Portland Style as "REI meets Dolce & Gabanna." I however, would argue that PDX style is Sports Authority meets Zara and Yo Vintage, accessorized with a scarf and handmade jewelry from a local designer. Although the PDX style is laid back and casual, Portlanders still go for the higher in and trendy name brands. "Everyone" and their momma has a North Face or Columbia Sportswear fleece and rain jacket....everyone.
Portland is definitely a market for outerwear, sportswear and street-wear brands but, Portland isn't all rain jackets and vintage threads. There are those who have awesome style who I'd describe as REI meets Topshop. People who are uniqurely trendy and look as though they could be in the pages of Porter magazine.

Overall, Portland is in a class of its own when it comes to fashion but the one thing I love about this city is that the people here are uniquely themselves... the good, the bad and the in-between.

I love the casual, wear-what-you-want attitude in Portland. And yes, often with added individual flair. I wear my collection of men's Jam's World shirts all summer long here and no one laughs. But seriously, who buys the $2000 bags featured in the entry of Nordstrom? Don't see those being paraded around on the streets. Plenty of expensive shoes though. We love our feet. :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree. I'd pick nice quality shoes over a bag any day! I'm definitely a shoes kinda girl. (:
DeleteHa!! So true. I like your assessment of the hybrid that is PDX style. I've always been a little mixed up, growing up here and trying different trends. I remember articles like that from 2003, and interviews with people on the street. Cool that it's almost academic now!
