I finally got the knit canvas sweatshirt from Make It Good that I've been eyeing for what feels like forever! And it's goooood!
Make It Good is a local men and women's apparel line that is designed and manufactured right here in Portland. For the past few months I've been gravitating towards black and white and the minimalist aesthetic so when I saw this sweatshirt I was sold.
If you've been following my blog for a while or if you follow me on Instagram, you may know that I'm a huge supporter of local fashion but to be completely honest, I haven't bought a whole lot from local clothing designers. Out of my entire wardrobe I'd say I only have about five pieces that came from a local boutique or designer, the main reason being because of price.
As someone who works in the fashion industry and has many designer friends, I fully understand the struggles that come along with sourcing materials and maintaining production on a small scale. I also appreciate the time and effort it takes to create each pieces so I totally understand and agree with why the price point is what it is but as a small business owner myself, I've found it hard to buy a simple dress or top for close to $250 when I can buy something similar at H&M for a lot cheaper. Although I love the local fashion industry and want to support it's growth, if we're being completely honest, sometimes financially that can be a struggle. However, I'm finding that it's totally worth it.
Although local fashion tends to be a bit pricey, you can't beat the quality. (And, if you add up how much money you'd spend replacing an item over and over at Forever21, it's probably a lot cheaper in the long run-ha!)
What's helped me has been to budget for the pieces that I really want and to also look at it as an investment. Not only am I investing in a quality piece that I'll be able to wear season after season but I'm also supporting the local industry and most importantly, someone's dream.
Not to mention, if I can buy a $120 dress from Topshop, certainly I can spend the same on a dress from a local designer and help them get to the Topshop level-ha!

I love the play on patterns. The fedora seems like the odd piece but it actually worked with the overall look. I love it!
ReplyDeleteI love that look. I don't know if I'd be brave enough for those two bold patterns together but you look awesome.
ReplyDeleteA great combination of patterns - Love this look!
ReplyDeleteLove the combination of patterns! Very chic.
ReplyDeleteVery cool use of patterns - I'm pretty sure I would have never thought patterned pants would work on me and never picked it up, but you show me patterned pants aren't necessarily a huge flag to wave everyone to look at my hips if coordinated right in an outfit!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way, especially living in a city like Portland. We have a lot of great options. As someone NOT in the fashion industry, I find it is also hard to justify the spend when you don't know of the designer or the quality. I have bought a few things from local places that typically I would not have spent such a high dollar on only to get apparel that pills or snags or other small but frustrating things.
ReplyDeleteI love this sweatshirt though....like seriously love it.
